In the last line of the book is arguably and the most important which says '' so we beat on,
boats against the current borne ceaselessly into the past'', and this embodies the thematic
conflict that defines the great Gatsby because it refers to the dualities of Gatsby and
America.
Also the final line states that echoes what Gatsby does throughout the novel as well what he is
doing. Gatsby also compares the wonder felt by discoverers seeing a continent for the first
time. Nick also compares men rowing in wonder toward a discovered land. To Gatsby it means
to him that all people are generally struggling endlessly toward a past that he wants to
capture.
Nick's commentary toward the end of the novel by death and how it was more possible to
dream about big dreams and we as people are forced to try to get back to the past but our
humanity makes us want to go back in time when dream were possible and the problem is
we can't get there.
Nick is also returning to the theme of the significance of the past to the dreams
of the future. He focuses on the struggle od human beings to achieve their goals by both
transcending and re-creating the past and yet are trying to prove to themselves that their
unable to move beyond the past.
